Calendar for August 22 Saint Apostle Matthias
He was originally from Bethlehem, from the tribe of Judah. He studied in Jerusalem, under Saint Simeon the God-Receiver. He was numbered among the Seventy Minor Apostles. After the Ascension of the Lord, the apostles chose him by lot as one of the Twelve, instead of Judas the traitor (Acts 1:26). He preached the Gospel in Judea, and then in Ethiopia, where he suffered great suffering. He also preached in Macedonia, where they wanted to blind him, but he was saved by becoming invisible to his persecutors. After being in prison, where the Lord appeared to him and strengthened him, he returned to Judea. There he was brought to trial before the high priest Annas, who had previously killed the apostle James. He was stoned to death, and then his head was cut off with an axe.
Holy Martyr Anthony. Holy Martyrs Julian, Marcian and others with them. Assumption Fast.
