Calendar for August 23 - Saint Martyr and Archdeacon Lavrentius
At the time of the persecution under the emperor Decius, they brought Pope Sixtus to court with two deacons, Felix and Agapita. Laurentius said to him: "Where are you going, father, without your son, where is the archpriest without his archdeacon"? The Pope prophesied to him an even more difficult torment. Lavrentius was the treasurer and economist, and he transferred the church's valuables to the home of the widow Kyriakia, who he cured of a severe headache, and the blind man Crescentus regained his sight. In the dungeon, he healed the slave Lucilius of his blindness and baptized him. Seeing this, the jailer Hippolytus was also baptized, who later died. Lavrenti was beaten on the face with stones, and on the body with a chain with sharp teeth (a scorpion). Finally, they put him on an iron coffin under which they put the fire. Saint Lawrence died for Christ in 258.
