Calendar for August 23 The Holy Martyr and Archdeacon Lawrence
During the persecution under Emperor Decius, Pope Sixtus was brought to trial with two deacons, Felixissimus and Agapitus. Lawrence said to him: “Where are you going, father, without your son, where is the bishop without your archdeacon?” The pope prophesied even greater torments for him. Lawrence was a treasurer and steward, and he transferred church treasures to the home of the widow Cyriacia, who he cured of a severe headache, and restored sight to the blind Crescentus. In prison, he healed the prisoner Lucilius of blindness and baptized him. Seeing this, the jailer Hippolytus was also baptized, who later suffered. Lawrence was beaten on the face with stones, and on the body with a chain with sharp teeth (scorpion). Finally, they placed him on an iron coffin, under which they set fire. Saint Lawrence suffered for Christ in the year 258.
