Calendar for August 24 The Holy Martyr and Archdeacon Euplo
He was a deacon in Catania, Sicily. When Emperor Diocletian sent Duke Pentagur to Sicily to kill Christians, he found no one because the few who remained were hiding. Then someone accused Euplo of going with a book to secret Christians and reading it to them. When they brought him to trial, they hung that book, the Holy Gospel, around his neck and threw him into prison. After 7 days of starvation, they handed him over to torture. They beat him severely with iron rods, and he mocked them: "This torture is like a spider's web for me, find some people." Then he opened the Gospel and read from it to the people. Then many converted to the faith of Christ. Saint Euplo was beheaded in 304. His miraculous relics are in the village of Vico della Batonia, near Naples.
