Calendar for August 26 - Saint Tikhon of Zadon - (Devotion to the Transfiguration)
Born in the village of Korocka in the Novgorod province in 1724. He lost his father early. In the seminary, he showed a great gift for learning, so even before finishing school, he was appointed as a teacher of the Greek language there. He became a monk when he was 34 years old. He quickly advanced in the ministry, until he was ordained as the bishop of Voronezh. He sat on the episcopal throne for less than five years, and then, due to poor health, he retired to the Zadon Monastery. He had a special gift of tears and love for those who slandered him. He spent all his time in work, prayer and reading soul-beneficial books. Everything he had he gave to the poor, and he himself lived extremely meagerly. He passed away in 1783 in Zadonsk, where his miraculous relics still rest today.
