Calendar for August 26 Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk – (Hydany of the Transfiguration)
Born in the village of Korotskaya in the Novgorod province in 1724. He lost his father early. In the seminary, he showed a great gift for learning, so even before graduating from school he was appointed a lecturer in the Greek language there. He tonsured a monk when he was 34 years old. He quickly advanced in the service, until he was ordained Bishop of Voronezh. He sat on the episcopal throne for less than five years, and then, due to poor health, he retired to the Zadonsky Monastery. He had a special gift of tears and love for those who slandered him. He spent all his time in work, prayer and reading books that were beneficial to the soul. He shared everything he had with the poor, and he himself lived extremely meagerly. He reposed in 1783 in Zadonsk, where his miraculous relics still rest today.
