Calendar for August 4 - Saint Mary Magdalene – Blessed Mary
Equal-to-the-apostle myrrh-bearer, born in Magdala, near Lake Genisaret. He was tormented by 7 evil spirits from whom the Lord Jesus freed him. Next to the crucified Lord on Golgotha, she stood and mourned together with the Holy Mother of God. When the Lord was resurrected, she saw him twice: first alone, and then with the other myrrh-bearers. After that, she traveled to Rome, took the red dyed egg to Emperor Tiberius and greeted him with the words: "Christ is risen"! In doing so, she accused Pilate of unjustly condemning the Lord, and the emperor moved him to Gaul, where he died of a serious illness. From Rome, she traveled to Ephesus, where she helped Saint John the Theologian in preaching the Gospel, and where she peacefully passed away. Her relics were later transferred to Constantinople.
Priest-martyr Phocas. Venerable Kornilije Pereyaslavski. Holy Martyr Markel.
