Calendar for August 4 Saint Mary Magdalene – Blessed Mary
An equal-to-the-apostles myrrh-bearer, born in Magdala, near the Lake of Gennesaret. She was tormented by 7 evil spirits from which the Lord Jesus freed her. She stood next to the crucified Lord on Golgotha and mourned together with the Most Holy Theotokos. When the Lord was resurrected, she saw him twice: first alone, and then with the other myrrh-bearers. Then she traveled to Rome, took a red-painted egg to Caesar Tiberius and greeted him with the words: “Christ is risen”! In doing so, she accused Pilate of unjustly condemning the Lord, and the emperor transferred him to Gaul, where he died of a serious illness. From Rome, she traveled to Ephesus, where she helped Saint John the Theologian in preaching the Gospel, and where she peacefully reposed. Her relics were later transferred to Constantinople.
Hieromartyr Phocas. Venerable Cornelius of Pereyaslavl. Holy Martyr Marcellus.
