Calendar for August 5 - Priest Martyr Apollinarius
A native of Antioch. Saint Peter the Apostle took him with him to Rome, where he ordained him bishop of Ravenna. In Ravenna, Apollinaris healed the son of the soldier Irenaeus from blindness and converted his entire household to the faith of Christ. After he healed the wife of the military commander of Ravenna, he baptized his entire household. He stayed in his home for 12 years, preaching the Gospel in Ravenna, for which the heathen elders tortured him several times and, finally, exiled him to Illyricum. Having survived a shipwreck on the way, Saint Apollinaris continued to preach the Gospel in the Balkans, all the way to the Danube. Then he headed to Thrace. After three years, he was expelled back to Italy. In Ravenna, where his relics rest today, pagans stabbed him with knives.
Holy Martyrs Trophimus and Theophilus and others with them.
