Calendar for August 9 Saint Great Martyr Panteleimon
A native of Nicomedia, from a pagan father and a Christian mother. As a young man, he studied medicine. He healed a blind man, whom the doctors had treated in vain, in the name of Christ. The doctors accused him to Emperor Maximian, before whom he declared himself a Christian and before whom he healed a paralytic in the same way as the blind man. The emperor put Saint Panteleimon to torture, but the Lord appeared to him several times and healed him. Finally, on the gallows, he kneels in prayer. The executioner hits him in the neck with a sword, but the sword breaks. And he could not cut him until he finished his prayer and himself asked to be cut. Saint Panteleimon suffered in the year 304. His relics are miraculous. They are invoked in prayers during the blessing of water and the blessing of oil.
