Calendar for February 12 The Holy Three Hierarchs
This joint celebration of the great saints, pillars of the Church of Christ: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom was established in the 11th century. When a dispute arose among the people about which of the three was the greatest, and when some called themselves Basilians, others Gregorians and the third Johannites, the three of them appeared in a dream to Bishop John of Euchaitis, first individually, and then all three in great glory and beauty and said to him: “We are one in God, as you see, and there is nothing contradictory in us… nor is there any first and second among us”. And they advised him to write a common service for them and to appoint a day for their joint celebration. The Greeks celebrate this day not only as a church, but also as the greatest national and school holiday.
