Calendar for February 18 The Holy Martyr Agathia
She was born in Palermo, Sicily, to noble and wealthy parents. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Decius, she was brought before the judge Quintian, who, because of her beautiful appearance, wanted to have her as his wife. Agathia told him that she was the bride of Christ, and the judge subjected her to great torture. She was flogged, spat upon, tied to a tree, and beaten until she bled. When she still refused to deny Christ, her breasts were cut off. In prison, the Apostle Peter appeared to her and restored her whole body and health. She was again taken out for torture and again thrown into prison, where she surrendered her pious soul to God. This was in the city of Catania, in the year 251. And her tormentor Quintianus, soon after, was bitten on the face by his horse and killed with its hooves.
Holy Martyr Theodula. Saint Polyeuctus, Patriarch of Constantinople.
