Calendar for February 24 Saint Great Martyr George of Kratovac
A native Serb, from Kratovo, near Stip. As a child, he learned the trade of a blacksmith. He was orphaned early. He was handsome and tall, and so that the Turks would not take him to the Sultan's court, he went to Sofia, where he took refuge with the priest Peter. But even there, the Turks noticed his virtues and sent one of their lawyers to persuade him to accept the faith of Muhammad. However, George so wonderfully confessed the faith of Christ before this lawyer that he slandered him for blaspheming Muhammad. The Turks handed him over to the judge, who also tried to convert him to Islam. But George remained steadfastly by his Christ, while the priest Peter and the entire Church in Sofia prayed to God to strengthen him. He was burned at the stake in 1515, when he was 18 years old.
