Calendar for February 9 Transfer of the Relics of Saint John Chrysostom
This date commemorates the transfer of his relics from the Armenian village of Komana, where he died in exile, to Constantinople, where he served as patriarch. The coffin with the relics was not allowed to be moved until Emperor Theodosius the Younger wrote a letter to Saint Chrysostom, begging for forgiveness (since his mother Eudoxia was responsible for the saint's exile). When this letter was placed on the coffin, it became completely light. In Constantinople, the emperor spoke over the relics on behalf of his mother: “While I lived a temporal life, I did you harm, and now that you live an immortal life, be useful to my soul…” When the coffin was brought into the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, everyone heard from the saint’s lips: “Peace to all”! This happened in the year 438.
