Calendar for January 13 Venerable Melania of Rome
Born in Rome of pious and wealthy parents, who forced her to marry Apinianus, a famous young man. When she gave birth to her second child, she fell seriously ill. She recovered when her husband swore to live with her as a sister. When God took both of their children, they sold all their property, distributed the money to the poor, and devoted themselves to an ascetic life. They visited famous spiritual fathers in Egypt. Melania had the custom of reading the Holy Scriptures three times a year. After receiving a blessing from Patriarch Cyril in Jerusalem, Melania closed herself off on the Mount of Olives and lived for fourteen years in strict fasting and prayer. She then founded a monastery for men and a monastery for women. She presented herself to God in 439.
Saint Righteous Joseph, King David and James, brother of the Lord. Venerable Martyr Zotik the Orphan. Blessed Theophylact, Archbishop of Ohrid. Saint Dositej of Zagreb, Confessor.
