Calendar for January 19 Theophany
When the Lord Jesus Christ turned 30 years old on earth, the beginning of his teaching and saving work was marked by his baptism in the Jordan. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says: “The beginning of the holy water, the beginning of the Gospel is the Jordan”. With this act, the mystery of the Holy Trinity, hinted at in the Old Testament, was revealed to the world, the mystery of one God in the Trinity. The Father appeared to the sense of hearing (he testified about the Son), the Holy Spirit to the sense of sight (in the form of a dove), and the Son, in addition, to the sense of touch. By the immersion and baptism of the Lord in the Jordan, Christ’s mission in the world and the way of our salvation were revealed to us: the Lord took upon himself the sins of the human race and died under them (immersion) and came to life (emergence from the water). So we too must die as a sinful person and come to life as a reborn person.
