Calendar for January 23 Saint Gregory of Nyssa
Brother of Basil the Great. When, as a priest, his wife, Blessed Theozva, died, he was consecrated bishop of Nyssa. He is characterized by both immense worldly knowledge and spiritual experience. He participated in the Second Ecumenical Council. It is believed that he composed the second part of the Creed. He was a great orator, interpreter of Holy Scripture and theologian. Because of his defeat at the Council, the adherents of the Arian heresy, during the time of Emperor Valens, their like-minded person, were particularly drawn to him, as their formidable opponent. They deposed him from the episcopal throne and exiled him. He spent eight years in exile, suffering great misery and humiliation. He died in old age, at the end of the 4th century. Throughout the centuries he remained a great luminary of the Church.
Venerable Dometian of Mytilene. Venerable Ammon. Saint Marcian.
