Calendar for January 31 Saint Athanasius the Great
He was born in Alexandria in 296. As a deacon, he accompanied Archbishop Alexander to Nicaea, at the First Ecumenical Council. There he became famous for his learning and zeal. He contributed greatly to the suppression of the Aryan heresy. He wrote the Creed, which was adopted at the Council. When Alexander died, he was elected Archbishop of Alexandria. He was Archbishop for over 40 years, but not all the time on the throne. He was persecuted by heretics all his life. He hid from his persecutors in private homes, in the desert, even in a well and a tomb. He fled to Rome twice. Only before his death did he live a short time in peace. There are few saints who were persecuted so much. He often went to Saint Anthony, his spiritual father. He died in 373.
