Calendar for July 17 The Holy Martyr Tsar Nicholas Romanov and Others with Him
Nicholas Romanov was born in Tsarskoye Selo in 1868. His father, the Russian Tsar Alexander III, wanted Nicholas to be a strong and tough soldier, but he was of a gentle nature. He married Alexandra (Alix of Hesse) in 1894. Between 1895 and 1901, Nicholas and Alexandra had four princesses: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia. In 1904, Prince Alexei was also born. The Bolsheviks killed them all in Yekaterinburg on the night of July 16-17, 1918. Tsar Nicholas was deeply religious. During his reign, ten thousand churches and over seven hundred and fifty monasteries were built in Russia. He especially revered the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov, who prophesied his and his family's martyrdom.
