Calendar for July 2 Saint John of Shanghai
Vladimir John (Maksimovich), originally Serbian, was born in Kharkov in 1896. As an officer in the Tsarist army, he fought against the Bolsheviks. He was wounded in the leg and remained lame for the rest of his life. Having escaped to Serbia, he earned a living by selling newspapers on the street. He walked barefoot in both summer and winter. His spiritual father, Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky), tonsured him a monk in the Milkovo Monastery. Since then, he has never gone to bed to sleep. He was a bishop in Shanghai, Paris, and San Francisco. He spent his life in great asceticism, in constant prayer to God, and God gifted him with miracles: he performed miracles while still alive, and after his repose, there is no telling how many. The Russian Church Abroad canonized him in 1994. His relics are in San Francisco.
