Calendar for July 27 - Holy Apostle Aquila
A Jew, one of the Seventy. He lived in Italy with his wife Priscilla. When the Jews were expelled from Rome, he moved to Corinth. Apostle Paul baptized them and stayed in their home for a year and a half. The apostle Paul writes from Ephesus. "Aquila and Priscilla, together with their local church, greet you very much in the Lord" (I Cor. 16, 19). And when they returned to Rome, the Apostle writes: "Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus, who laid down their necks for my life, to whom I thank not only myself, but also all the churches from the Gentiles; greet their local church as well" (Rom. 16, 3-4). And, chained in Rome, the Apostle writes again: "Greet Priscilla and Aquila" (II Tim. 4, 19). Aquila, the bishop, was killed by the pagans.
