Calendar for July 31 - Holy Martyr Emilian
During the time of Julian the Apostate in Dorostol, in Thrace, the young Aemilian was the mayor's servant. When the emperor began to satirize the Christians, his emissary came to Dorostol but did not find a single one. Pleased with this, the governor organized a great celebration and feast, and ordered a sacrifice to the idols. That night, Emilian smashed all the idols in the idol temples, in the streets and squares, with a mallet. In the morning, the city is flooded with fear and horror. Everyone went in search of the "criminal", and caught a peasant whom they had seen passing by the temple that morning. In order not to appear before God as the murderer of an innocent man, Emilian confessed to the governor what he had done. After many torments, they burned him in the fire, where he surrendered his soul to the Lord in 362.
Venerable Pamvo. Venerable Paisius and Isaiah. Venerable John the Suffering.
