Calendar for July 31 Saint Martyr Aemilian
During the time of Julian the Apostate in Dorostol, in Thrace, the young man Aemilian was the mayor's servant. When the emperor began to persecute Christians, his envoy came to Dorostol but found none. Delighted by this, the governor organized great rejoicing and a feast, and ordered sacrifices to be made to idols. That night, Aemilian smashed all the idols in the idol temples, in the streets and squares, with a hammer. In the morning, fear and horror swept through the city. Everyone set out in search of the "criminal", and they caught a peasant whom they had seen passing by the temple that morning. In order not to find himself before God as the murderer of an innocent man, Aemilian confessed to the governor what he had done. After much torment, he was burned in a fire, where he gave up his soul to the Lord in the year 362.
Venerable Pamvo. Venerable Paisios and Isaiah. Venerable John the Long-Suffering.
