Calendar for June 21 Saint Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates
Saint Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates. This saint is celebrated (February 8), and his life is described there, and on June 8, the transfer of his relics from Heraclius to Euchaitis is celebrated. Thus, Saint Theodore bequeathed to his servant Varus during his suffering: “My body,” he said, “lay in Euchaitis on the estate of my ancestors.” Saint Anastasius of Sinai recorded this miracle from the icon of Saint Theodore: in the town of Karsat near Damascus, there was a church in the name of Saint Theodore Stratilates. When the Saracens conquered Damascus, a group of Saracens with women and children settled in that church. On the wall was a fresco of Saint Theodore. One Saracen shot an arrow and hit the saint’s image in the face. Suddenly blood flowed from the image. Soon after that, the entire group of Saracens died in the church. Saint Anastasius says that he himself was in that church, saw the image of the saint in the courtyard and the traces of the congealed blood.
