Calendar for June 27 Holy Prophet Elisha
Lived 900 years before Christ. When the Lord took the aged prophet Elijah to Himself, He revealed to him that He had appointed Elisha, the son of Shaphat, from the tribe of Reuben, from the city of Abelmeul, as his successor. Elijah told Elisha the will of the Lord and threw his mantle over him. In purity and zeal he was equal to the greatest prophets, and in the power received from God he surpassed them all. He divided the waters of the Jordan, made the bitter water of Jericho drinkable, brought water down into the trenches dug during the war with the Moabites, multiplied the oil in the pots of a poor widow, raised the dead son of a Samaritan woman, blinded an entire Syrian army, and put another to flight… He foretold many events. He died in a ripe old age.
Saint Methodius, Patriarch of Constantinople. Saint John, Metropolitan of Euchaete. Venerable Niphon.
