Venerable Procopius was from the Decapolis, near the Sea of ​​Galilee. He gave himself up to the ascetic life in his youth. When during the time of Emperor Leo the Isaurian, Christians were persecuted for their veneration of icons, Procopius stood up in defense of icons, proving that icon worship was not idolatry, because worshiping icons was not worshiping dead matter, but the living saints depicted on them. For this reason, he was arrested, beaten, and scourged with iron. When Emperor Leo was killed (in body, since his soul had perished much earlier), Saint Procopius, along with his fellow sufferer Saint Basil and other holy fathers, was released from chains and prison and returned to the monastery, where he peacefully reached old age. He reposed peacefully at the beginning of the 9th century.
