Calendar for March 19 The 42 Holy Martyrs of Amorea
They were all dukes of the Byzantine emperor Theophilus, who were captured by the Saracens with other Christians when they captured Amorea. The rest of the captives were either killed or sold into slavery, and the dukes were thrown into prison, where they remained for 7 years. Muslim leaders came several times to advise them to accept Islam, but the dukes would not listen. When they told them that Muhammad was the true prophet and not Christ, the dukes explained to them that Christ had many witnesses, the ancient prophets from Moses to John the Baptist, who testified about Him, and Muhammad himself testified for himself and had no witnesses. They were beheaded in 845. The Saracens threw their bodies into the Euphrates, but they floated to the other bank where the Christians buried them.
Blessed Jov. Holy Martyrs Conon the Father and Conon the Son. Easter Fast.
