Calendar for March 21 - Saint Theophylact the Confessor
When Tarasius, the first imperial adviser, as a layman, was elected Patriarch of Constantinople, several of his friends, including Theophylact, received the monastic rank with him and from him. Tarasius sent him as a bishop in Nicomedia. When Leo the Armenian came to the imperial throne, even though the iconoclastic heresy was cursed at the VII Ecumenical Council, he wanted to replace Orthodoxy with it. Saint Theophylact openly resisted him, saying to him: "O king, an angry calamity will come upon you suddenly, and you will not find anyone who will deliver you from it." That is why Saint Theophylact was removed from his position by the emperor's order and sent to prison where, suffering many hardships and insults, he lived for 30 years. He surrendered his soul to the Lord Jesus Christ around the year 845.
