Calendar for March 4 Holy Martyr Philothea of Athens
Born in Athens in 1522. Her childless parents prayed to God for her and, when she was 12 years old, they married her off. Her husband was cruel and abused her daily. After three years, God took him from the face of the earth. When her parents passed away, she built a women's monastery and then became a nun. Very quickly, the monastery was filled with nuns. She also built hospitals and, secretly, schools for Christian children. She took Christian girls who were fleeing Turkish oppression into the monastery. She was extremely merciful and devoted to her neighbors. The Turks threw her into prison. Once they beat her so badly that she soon passed away. This was in 1589. Her relics are miraculous and incorruptible. They rest in Athens, in the altar of the Metropolitan Cathedral.
The Holy Apostles Archippus, Philemon and Apphia. Venerable Dositheus.
