Calendar for May 16 - Holy Martyrs Timothy and Maura
Groom and bride. Twenty days after they were married, because of their faith in Christ, they were brought to court in Thebaid, before the governor Arrian. Arian said to Timothy: "Don't you see the instruments of torture around you", and the latter answered him: "And you don't see the angels of God who strengthen me". Then they pierced his ears with an iron bar so that his pupils popped out from the pain. Then they hung him upside down and put a piece of wood in his mouth. At first, Mavra was afraid of pain, but her husband encouraged her. They pulled out her hair and cut off her fingers. In the end, they crucified them, facing each other, where they remained for 9 days, encouraging each other, and then they gave their souls to the Lord. These two wonderful martyrs died for Christ in 286, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian.
Venerable Teodosije of Kievo-Pecherski.
