Calendar for May 17 - Holy Martyr Pelagius of Tarsus
Born in Tarsus, from unknown, wealthy parents. Hearing about the salvation of the soul, love for Christ flared up in it. It was a time of terrible persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. Once the emperor came to Tarsus, and his son fell in love with Pelagius. But she ran away and found Bishop Klin, who baptized her. After that, she gave away her wealth, went home and told her mother that she was baptized. Hearing that, Tsarević stabbed himself with a knife. And the evil mother accuses her daughter, the empress, who, seeing Pelagia's beauty, broke into flames pure passion for her. The Holy Virgin refused him, and he ordered that they burn her. When they found her, she crossed herself, entered the red-hot ox and melted as if from wax. She died for Christ in 287.
Priest-martyr Silouan, Bishop Gaski. Venerable Nicephorus.
