Calendar for May 18 Holy Great Martyr Irene
She lived in the Balkans, in the city of Megedon, where her father was the lord. It is believed that she was a Slovenian, some think she was a Serbian. Saint Timothy, a disciple of the Apostle Paul, baptized her and her courtiers. Her father wanted to torture her, but she converted him to Christianity. She was tortured by 4 emperors. Emperor Zedekiah buried her up to her head in a canal full of snakes, then tied her to a mill wheel. His son, Emperor Sheba, shod her, loaded her with sand, and led her by the bridle. Emperor Numerian threw her into three red-hot oxen. Emperor Savorius killed her, but God revived her and the emperor was baptized. Through her torture, over 100,000 people came to Christ. Finally, she lay down in the tomb herself and told her teacher Apellian to close it. After 4 days, when the tomb was opened, she was not there.
Saints Martin and Heraclius.
