Calendar for May 18 - Holy Great Martyr Irina
She lived in the Balkans, in the city of Megedon, where her father was the ruler. She is believed to be Slovenian, some think Serbian. Saint Timothy, a disciple of the Apostle Paul, baptized her and her courtiers. Her father wanted to torture her, but she converted him to Christianity. She was tortured by 4 emperors. King Zedekiah buried his head in a canal full of snakes and tied him to a mill wheel. His son, King Savach, shod horses, loaded them with sand and led the bridle. Emperor Numerian threw into three red-hot oxen. The king killed Savorius, but God revived him, so the king was baptized. Through her torture, over 100,000 people came to Christ. Finally, she lay down in the grave alone and told her teacher Apellianus to close it. After 4 days, when they opened the grave, she was not there.
