Calendar for May 2 Venerable John the Old Cave Monk
He practiced asceticism in the so-called Old Cave or the Lavra of Chariton the Great in Palestine. Having loved Christ the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind, from his youth he began to travel to holy places and listen to the teachings and advice of holy people. Finally, he settled in the Cave of Chariton, where he devoted himself to hard asceticism, spending days and years in fasting, prayer and vigil, constantly thinking about death and learning humility. Like a well-ripened fruit, he would be harvested by death and transferred to Paradise. He lived and reposed in the 8th century.
Venerable Simeon the Barefoot. Saint Blessed Matrona of Moscow. Holy Martyrs Christopher, Theona and Antoninus. Saint Tryphon, Patriarch of Constantinople. Venerable Martyr Agatangel.
