Calendar for May 29 Venerable Theodore the Consecrated

Disciple of Saint Pachomius. Born and raised as a pagan, but as a young man he came to know the true faith, was baptized, and having heard about Saint Pachomius, fled to this monastery secretly from his parents. Saint Pachomius tonsured him and loved him for his unusual zeal and obedience. When his mother came to call him back home, he did not even want to appear to his mother, but prayed to God for her, so that God would enlighten her with the truth. And indeed, the mother not only did not return her son home, but did not return herself. Seeing a nunnery not far away, which was run by Pachomius' sister, she entered it and tonsured him. After a while, Theodore's brother, Paphnutius, also came to the monastery, and he also tonsured him. It once happened that the bishop of the city of Panopolis summoned Saint Pachomius to establish a monastery for many who desired a monastic life. Pachomius took Theodore with him, and entrusted him with the main task of establishing the monastery. After the death of Saint Pachomius, Theodore became the abbot of all of Pachomius' monasteries, and until a very old age he lived a life pleasing to God, guiding many monks on the path of salvation. He peacefully reposed and passed into the kingdom of eternal light in the year 368.
