Calendar for November 17 Venerable Joannikios the Great
He was born in the village of Marikati, in the region of Bithynia. As a boy, tending sheep, he would fence off the flock with the sign of the cross, and would spend the whole day in prayer. In the army, he showed great courage. Then he withdrew to Olympus in Asia, where he became a monk and devoted himself to asceticism. He rode around in various places for over 50 years. He received from God a great gift of miracles: he healed the sick, cast out demons, tamed beasts, crossed over water as if on dry land, became invisible to people when he wished, and prophesied. He had exceptionally great humility and meekness. And he was a giant in body. The iconoclasts deceived him, but he quickly recovered and became a great supporter of icons. He died peacefully in 846, at the age of 94.
Hieromartyr Nikandar, Bishop of Myra, and Hermes, Presbyter.
