Calendar for November 18 The Venerable Martyrs Galaktion and Epistima
Native to Edessa, in Phoenicia. Galaktion's mother Leucippeia was barren until she was baptized. Then she also brought her husband to Christ. When his mother died, Galaktion's father betrothed the virgin Epistima, but he advised her to be baptized and then become a monk. Then they went to Mount Publius, he to a male monastery, and she to a female monastery, and both showed themselves to be great ascetics. They did not leave the monastery, nor did they see each other until their deaths. When they were brought to trial, while Galaktion was being flogged, Epistima cried, so they also put her to torture. Then they cut off their hands, then their feet, and finally their heads. They were buried by Eutolius, a slave of Epistima's parents, then a monk with Galaktion, who wrote their lives. They suffered in 253.
Holy Apostles Peter, Hermas, Linus, Gaius and Philologus. Saint Jonah, Archbishop of Novgorod.
