Calendar for November 6 Holy Martyr Aretas
The governor of the city of Negran in the Omirite country, in southern Arabia, which was ruled by the Jew Dunaan. Dunaan besieged the Christian city of Negran and told its inhabitants that he would kill them all if they did not deny Christ, but they closed in. Since he could not conquer the city, Dunaan told them that he wanted nothing from them, only that they let him enter and take the tribute they owed. Then the perjurer summoned Aretas, an old man of 95 years, with the clergy and other prominent citizens, and beheaded them all. Then he killed about 4,000 citizens of Negran. The Byzantine emperor Justin, hearing of this deed, sent a letter to the Ethiopian emperor Elezboius to attack Dunaan, which he did and killed his entire army and beheaded him. These holy martyrs suffered in the year 523.
