Calendar for November 6 Holy Martyr Aretha
Governor of the city of Negran in the Omirite country, in southern Arabia, which was ruled by Dunaan the Jew. Dunaan besieged the Christian city of Negran and told its inhabitants that he would kill them all if they did not renounce Christ, but they shut themselves up. As he could not conquer the city, Dunaan told them that he would do nothing to them, only to let him enter and take the tribute they owed. Then the perjurer called Areta, an old man of 95 years old, together with the clerics and other respectable citizens, and cut them all down. Then he killed about 4,000 citizens of Negran. The Byzantine emperor Justin, hearing of this misdeed, sent a letter to the Ethiopian emperor Elesvoy to attack Dunaan, which he did and killed all his army and cut him down. These holy martyrs suffered in 523.
Saint Elezvoi, Emperor of Ethiopia. Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of All Sorrowful Joys. Venerable Areta Pecherski.
