Calendar for November 9 Holy Martyr Nestor
A Thessalonian, he was taught the Christian faith by Saint Demetrius. Emperor Maximian entertained the people in various ways, including gladiatorial fights. His favorite was a certain Lia, of Goliath stature and strength. Seeing Christians being brought to the gladiator, Nestor went to the prison of Saint Demetrius and asked for his blessing to let Lia fight. Saint Demetrius blessed him, made the sign of the cross on his forehead and chest, and told him that he would defeat Lia, but would suffer for Christ. Everyone thought that Lia would easily defeat the beardless young man, but Nestor threw him on spears. And everyone began to shout: “Great is the God of Demetrius.” And the emperor ordered Nestor to be beheaded with a sword, and Demetrius to be impaled with spears in prison. Saint Nestor suffered in 306.
Venerable Nestor the Chronicler. Saint Andrew, Prince of Smolensk.
