From his youth he followed Christ, freeing himself from two heavy burdens: the burden of wealth and the burden of the body. He got rid of the first burden by distributing all his wealth to the poor, and the second by fasting. So he first healed himself, then he began to heal others. Seeing how everyone shines with the Holy Spirit, they chose him as bishop in Gortyn, in Crete, where he led the flock of Christ as a good shepherd. He was a father to the poor, wealth to the poor, healer to the sick. He performed many miracles through prayer: he killed a vicious snake, cast out demons, and healed the sick, not only in Gortyn, but also in Rome and Thebes. In Tiwaida, he brought down rain in a time of drought by prayer. There he gave his soul to God. He lived in the 7th century.
