Calendar for October 11 Venerable Chariton the Confessor
A prominent citizen of Iconium, he openly confessed Christ. When the persecution of Christians began under Emperor Aurelian, Chariton was immediately brought to trial, and his entire body was reduced to a mass of wounds. Emperor Aurelian then died, and Chariton was released. On his way to Jerusalem, he was captured by bandits but escaped through God's providence. He then withdrew to the Desert of Pharan, where he founded a monastery. He left a rule for that community and departed for another desert, near Jericho, where he founded a second monastery, known as Chariton's Monastery. Finally, he founded a third monastery, the Monastery of Souka. He surrendered his soul to the Lord in deep old age, in the year 350. His relics rest in the monastery he founded first. The rite of monastic tonsure is attributed to him.
Saint Baruch the Prophet. Saint Mark the Martyr, a shepherd. Saint Wenceslaus the Martyr, King of Bohemia.
