Calendar for October 13 Saint Gregory the Hieromartyr
A kinsman of the Persian King Artabanus and the Armenian King Khosrov. When these royal houses went to war against each other, Gregory went to Caesarea in Cappadocia, where he came to know the Christian faith, was baptized, and married. He dedicated both his sons, Ortan and Arostan, to the service of the Church. After his wife died, he returned to Armenia and entered the service of King Tiridates. Upon learning that Gregory was a Christian, the King subjected him to torture and cast him into a deep pit. Yet God preserved Gregory there for fourteen years. When Tiridates put to death thirty-seven nuns from a convent, he went mad. His sister received a vision in a dream revealing that he would not recover until he brought Gregory out of the pit. Gregory healed and baptized Tiridates. He was chosen as Bishop of Armenia, a land he enlightened with the Christian faith. He reposed in old age around the year 335.
Saint Martyrs Gaiana, Rhipsime, and thirty-five other nuns. Saint Michael, first Metropolitan of Kiev.
