Calendar for October 14 The Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos
During the reign of Emperor Leo the Wise (or the Philosopher), in the year 911, an all-night vigil was being held at the Blachernae Church in Constantinople. The church was filled with people. Standing in the background was Saint Andrew, Fool-for-Christ, together with his disciple Epiphanius. At the fourth hour of the night, the Most Holy Theotokos appeared above the congregation, holding a veil (omophorion) outstretched in her hands, as if covering the people. She shone with ineffable radiance, surrounded by apostles, saints, martyrs, and virgins. Upon seeing the Most Holy One, Saint Andrew pointed her out to the blessed Epiphanius. Today’s feast was established to commemorate that event, as well as the unceasing protection the Most Holy Theotokos extends to the Christian people. Her aid—to individuals and nations alike—has been confirmed countless times.
