Calendar for October 16 Holy Hieromartyr Dionysius the Areopagite
He is one of the 70 minor apostles. After graduating from the school of philosophy in Athens, he went to Egypt, where he was when the Lord Jesus breathed his last on the cross. When he returned to Athens, he married Damara. He was a member of the highest court of the Greeks, the Areopagus. He was baptized, along with his entire household, by the Apostle Paul, who, when he left his wife and children, appointed him Bishop of Athens. He met all the apostles, and also met the Most Holy Theotokos, which he later described. When the Apostle Paul suffered, he went to Gaul, where he brought many people to Christ. When he was 90 years old, he was martyred for Christ, together with the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius. All three were beheaded with the sword in the year 96. Saint Dionysius wrote many famous works.
