Calendar for October 16 Saint Hieromartyr Dionysius the Areopagite
He is counted among the Seventy Apostles. After completing his philosophical studies in Athens, he traveled to Egypt, where he was present when the Lord Jesus breathed His last upon the Cross. Upon returning to Athens, he married Damaris. He served as a member of the Areopagus, the highest court of the Greeks. He and his entire household were baptized by the Apostle Paul, who—after Dionysius left his wife and children—ordained him Bishop of Athens. He came to know all the Apostles and also met the Most Holy Theotokos, an encounter he later described. Following the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul, Dionysius traveled to Gaul, where he brought many people to Christ. At the age of 90, he suffered for the sake of Christ, alongside the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius. All three were beheaded in the year 96. Saint Dionysius authored many notable works.
