Calendar for October 17th Saint Stephen and Jelena (Štiljanović)

A Serbian Despot. He was a native of the village of Boljevići, near Virpazar, in the Crmnica region. He governed the Serbian people during very difficult times—first as the Prince of Paštrovići, and later in Srem. A righteous man of God and a patriot, this noble prince may be compared to Saint Alexander Nevsky or Saint Jovan Vladimir. He fell asleep in the Lord at the beginning of the 16th century. A light would appear at night over his grave, which led to the discovery of his relics. For a long time, his relics rested in the Šišatovac Monastery on Fruška Gora; they were later transferred to Belgrade, to the Cathedral Church, where they now lie alongside the relics of the Holy Prince Lazar. His wife, Jelena—upon witnessing her husband’s incorrupt relics and the miracles that occurred through them—became a nun and dedicated herself to ascetic struggle until the end of her life.

Hieromartyr Hierotheus. Venerable Ammon. Venerable Paul the Simple.
