Calendar for October 22nd Saint Stephen of Serbia (the Blind)
He was the son of Despot Đurađ and Jerina Branković. Đurađ gave his daughter Mara in marriage to Sultan Murad II as a sacrifice for the salvation of his people and his homeland. Later, Murad II took Mara’s brothers, Stephen and Grgur, as hostages and blinded them. Stephen assumed the rule of Serbia as Despot in 1458, following the passing of his youngest brother, Despot Lazar. Before long, he was forced to seek refuge in Albania, where he married Angelina, the sister-in-law of Skanderbeg. Blind and deeply afflicted, yet always devoted to God, he reposed in 1468 in Italy. His incorrupt and miracle-working relics were hacked to pieces and burned by the Turks, along with the Krušedol Monastery, in 1716. The remaining portions of his relics rest in the restored Krušedol Monastery on Fruška Gora—an endowment established by his son, Maxim.
The Holy Apostle James. The Venerable Andronicus and his wife, Athanasia. The Holy Righteous Abraham and Lot. Saint Demetrius, Patriarch of Alexandria.
