Calendar for October 3 Holy Great Martyr Eustathius
The great Roman general Placidus. Once, while hunting, a cross appeared to him among the antlers of a deer and he heard a voice calling him to be baptized. At baptism he was named Eustathius, his wife Theopistia and sons Agapius and Theopistus. Then he went away to Egypt, where some barbarian kidnapped his wife, and his children were carried away by beasts. Then they lived in the village of Vadisisa for 15 years as a tenant. When the barbarians attacked the Roman Empire, Emperor Trajan sent for him. His comrades found him and he defeated the barbarians. On his way back to Rome, he found his wife and sons. Trajan had already died and Hadrian became emperor, who asked Eustathius to offer sacrifices to idols. When he said he was a Christian, put him to the torture, along with his wife and children. They tired them out in a red-hot ox.
Saint Michael, Prince, and Theodore, Bollarin. Venerable Martyr Hilarion.
