The son of Beeri, from the tribe of Issachar. He lived and prophesied more than 800 years before Christ, during the reigns of the Judean kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, as well as the Israelite king Jeroboam II. His contemporaries included the holy prophets Isaiah, Micah, and Amos. His prophetic words are recorded in the book that bears his name, which consists of 14 chapters. He rebuked Israel and Judah for idolatry and prophesied God’s punishment for their sins; he foretold the destruction of Samaria and Israel due to their apostasy, while also speaking of God’s mercy toward the tribe of Judah. He further prophesied the abolition and cessation of Old Testament sacrifices, the coming of the Lord, and the abundance of gifts that He would bring with Him to the earth. He passed away peacefully at a very advanced age.
